Overview

The Roll Rat is a large mole rat creature found in Aberration and several other maps. Named for its unique ability to curl into a ball and roll at high speeds, this gentle giant is an effective transport mount that can carry up to three passengers. In the wild, Roll Rats burrow underground and unearth precious gems and resources. They are generally passive but will become aggressive if threatened or if someone steals their findings.

Dossier

Wild

Bearing a strong resemblance to its relative, the Naked Mole Rat, Heterocephalus magnus is a gentle giant that digs for plants and fungi with its imposing front teeth. While foraging, it often uncovers precious resources inadvertently, but survivors should claim them with caution, as this triggers an aggressive response. When threatened, Heterocephalus rolls up into a ball to shield itself with the armored plates on its back, much like an armadillo.

Domesticated

While hardly a ferocious war beast, Heterocephalus is an effective transport that can carry up to three passengers. In theory, it could also be siege weapon, as its rolling attack can dent even metal. Fortunately, most survivors use a special saddle that deploys a protective canopy when it starts spinning.

Behavior

  • Generally passive until provoked
  • Digs underground and unearths gems (Green, Blue, Rare Red)
  • Becomes hostile if player picks up unearthed gems
  • Attacks when threatened - curls into ball and rolls
  • Large turning radius makes it easy to dodge
  • Wild Roll Rats lose gem-unearthing ability after taming
